Artist Description
"Tom Russell is Johnny Cash, Jim Harrison and Charles Bukowski rolled into one. I feel a great affinity with Tom Russell's songs, for he's writing out of the wounded heart of America." -Lawrence Ferlinghetti
Tom Russell returns to Joe's Pub for the release of his new album titled Wounded Heart of America. Called "the greatest living country songwriter" by Rolling Stone, Tom Russell is a brilliant songwriter whose music is a powerful voice in the contemporary folk movement. His songs have been recorded by Johnny Cash, Joe Ely, Nancy Griffith, Dave Alvin and Doug Sahm. His career has spanned over 19 albums, including his new release, a collection of cowboy songs titled "Indians, Cowboys." Tom Russell has been a pauper and a poet, but his steadfast refusal to be goaded into the role of pawn has consigned him to the fringes of both the rock and country scenes.

A True American Troubadour
Tom Russell must be seen in person to be fully appreciated. Somewhere between folk, country and Americana, Tom Russell has found a place where NYC bohemia meets Our Lady of Guadalupe and where railroad tracks lead you to places where pain and pleasure collide. He's an intelligent songwriter whose songs can be poetic without the sentimentality. At other times, he can be raunchy and downright ornery. His voice is pure, deep and strong and resonates beautifully in any room I've ever heard him. Russell is a true American troubadour and a real legend. Not to be missed!
