Artist Description
Christina Courtin's debut LP is due out on Nonesuch Records this summer. To date, she has just released a short EP. You might not know, though. Between her frequent New York City performances, collaborations with string quartet Brooklyn Rider and chamber group The Knights, and frequent appearances on other artists' records, Christina Courtin is busy doing what she has always done: performing. She has been singing and playing violin since age three. Now twenty-four years old, Christina has developed a unique style of musicality. Her bold, bluesy voice is often compared to the wailings of Robert Plant and Janis Joplin. Yet she's forged her own defining sound. Her songs have an "immediately classic feel- like Norah Jones, with more brawn," (TimeOut NY), and her creativity is admired by Yo-Yo Ma, who praises her evident "passion for music."
Music has carried Christina from her hometown of Buffalo, New York, where she began writing and singing publicly at age sixteen, to Brooklyn, where she currently lives. She has been playing in New York City since 2002, and has worked and performed with Mark Mark O'Connor, Paula Robeson, Osvaldo Golijov, Dawn Upshaw, Yo-Yo Ma, and Michael Ward-Bergeman. She is currently working in the studio with Producer Greg Cohen and a band that includes Benmont Tench from Tom Petty's band and Jim Keltner, who has played with John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr.
