Artist Description
"Like Clint Eastwood, John Doe is an unusually handsome American pop-culture figure with an unusually hardy career...the songs play Doe's steely frontiersman reserve against his big tenor..."-The New Yorker
John Doe, lead singer and songwriter from the seminal LA punk/rockabilly band X and the alt-country before it was alt-country The Knitters, returns to Joe's Pub. His latest album, A Year in the Wilderness (Yep Roc), is an album that like John himself, explores the artistic and emotional common ground between punk and American roots music with its simple yet powerful-and in this case animalistic-themes of love, loss, destruction and redemption. Doe's solo career began with 1990's Meet John Doe, and he has since garnered worldwide acclaim. Entertainment Weekly calls his work, "rip-roarin' and warm-hearted," Q deems it "the tightest, finest and most morally acute music of the last 20 years," and The Boston Globe praises its "striking emotional territory...".
