Artist Description
Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are cum laude graduates of the University of Michigan’s musical theatre department and the recipients of the 2007 Jonathan Larson Award. At age 21, they became the youngest winners in the foundation's history. Pasek and Paul wrote the musical revue, EDGES, which has been produced throughout The United States, Canada, Australia and Europe, and is being licensed as part of Music Theatre International’s catalogue.Pasek and Paul were regular songwriters for Disney Channel's JOHNNY AND THE SPRITES, nominated for four 2009 Emmy Awards. They contributed music to WHITE NOISE [a cautionary musical], profiled on Good Morning America and ABC Primetime Live, slated for a Broadway run in the fall of 2009.
They have played sold-out concerts of their work at The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., Joe's Pub, The Zipper Factory and Ars Nova in New York City, and The Falcon Theatre in Los Angeles. They were invited participants of the first ever Johnny Mercer Songwriting Festival funded by the American Musical Theatre Project.
Benj and Justin co-wrote HORACE AND MORRIS BUT MOSTLY DOLORES for Theatreworks USA, and were listed as part of the "50 To Watch" upcoming playwrights and composers by The Dramatist Magazine. They have been interviewed on National Public Radio's Performance Space and were honored as 2007-2008 Dramatist Guild Fellows. They were selected to create a show for Orchard Project’s 2009 24-Hour Musicals Benefit, and will be featured in the upcoming documentary about that process. Additionally, their music can be heard in THESPIANS, a new theatre documentary due out in Fall of 2009. Their songs have been performed at Lincoln Center, Symphony Space and Carnegie Hall.
They are currently at work on two new musicals. The first, DOGFIGHT, is being developed at Lincoln Center Theater. The second is a full length musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH, developed at Goodspeed Opera House, directed by Graciela Daniele and choreographed by Pilobolus.
