Artist Description

"...a pioneer in world music" - The New York Times

Rudolph
first achieved international recognition through his long associations with two of the most musically diverse contemporary masters - the late, iconoclastic trumpeter Don Cherry and the legendary multi-reedist Yusef Lateef (a relationship that is still intact). He has released over 22 recordings as a leader/co-leader, most recently conducting his 30-piece Go: Organic Orchestra and with his acoustic/hip-hop/world rhythm group Hu: Vibrationa. His experience growing up through the Blues world has resulted in a most singular approach to the rich tapestry of contemporary music drawn from ancient traditions.

The Octet: Cornetist/flugelhornist Graham Haynes, multi-reedman Ned Rothenberg, guitarist Kenny Wessel, bassist Shanir Blumenkrantz and trap drummer Hamid Drake have all developed reputations as consummate improvisers through their work with a great many masters in the broad expanse of contemporary jazz-rooted traditions. They are joined by the Moroccan-born oudist/percussionist Brahim Fribgane and the Bansuri flutes and reeds of Steve Gorn, one of the few Western musicians recognized in India to have properly captured the subtlety and beauty of North Indian Classical music. Together the musical credits of theses artists span the entirety of contemporary music. Clearly, Rudolph's conception of the music contained on newest venture Dream Garden demands every bit of that experience and knowledge. Colors, images and stories flow seamlessly from track to track, all centered on the powerful rhythms of the dazzling flow set by Rudolph, Fribgane and Drake on an expansive array of international percussive instruments, and structured within the concept that Rudolph calls Cyclic Verticalism – form created by rhythmic cycles that move through shifting polymeters. The music reaches beyond American root with a dervish-like ecstasy… to create a truly extraordinary work of art and a joy to the ears and soul.
