Artist Description
The son of Oliver Mtukudzi, Zimbabwe’s best-selling artist, some might say Sam Mtukudzi has big shoes to fill. With his first album Rume Rimwe selling thousands in the first month of its release this might just be possible. Sam Mtukudzi first came to international attention in 2006, performing in his father’s band, when his multi-instrumental talents and boyish good-looks were winning over fans by the minute. It is said that talent is passed down through the family-line. This definitely rings true for Sam. Like his father, he is a striking performer with unbounded energy and charisma that has the audience eating from the palm of his hand from the first note. Sam Mtukudzi’s voice is not the rough, leathery voice we love that is his dad’s; instead it is refined and warm with an extraordinary range that has him soaring above the rest of the band. Since coming to prominence in 2006, Sam Mtukudzi’s band, the ‘Ay Band’ has performed all over Africa, and Sam’s following is growing at an unwavering rapid pace. It is only a matter of time when Sam Mtukudzi will be synonymous with the ‘new voice of Africa’.Latest Comment
