Ernest Ranglin

Artist Description

Simply put, Ernest Ranglin is the mon who came up with the riddim, mon.  There would be no ska, rock steady, or reggae if it weren't for the inventive chops of this mild-mannered Jamaican gentleman who turns into a six string super hero whenever he takes the stage. Ranglin's released stunning solo CDs, backed literally every name in Jamaican music--starting with Millie Smalls' "My Boy Lollipop"--and he's a jazz maestro as well. Every guitarist, green or seasoned, yearns to jam with Ernie, so expect a lineup of mystery guests at this rare performance.

Ernest Ranglin began performing while still in his teens in Jamaica and the Bahamas.  He gained international notice in 1964, however, when producer Chris Blackwell (founder of Island Records) brought him and Millie Small to London, England.   While there, Ranglin became resident guitarist for nine months at Ronnie Scott's jazz nightclub playing with top jazz artists of the time.  It was during this period that he and Small recorded “My Boy Lollipop” which became the first Jamaican song to achieve international success.

“To listen to the music of Ernest Ranglin is to participate in a story that dates back to before Jamaican independence in 1962,” according Joshua Chamberlain, host of The Mad Lion Reggae Show and a music promoter specializing in Caribbean music. “This is a story that finds its roots in diverse places – the Gold Coast of Africa, New Orleans’ Congo Square and the Mississippi Delta, as well as Havana, Port-au-Prince, Motown and Memphis. Like his predecessors, Ranglin bears witness to the shared experiences around him and relies on his music to spread the message, a universal message with a unique sound. Time and again, Ranglin has made crucial contributions to this musical legacy, one that is not governed by geography or philosophy, but rather by one guiding principle: ‘Does the music make you move?’ Clearly, for Ernest, the answer is yes.”
