Artist Description
Violinist Abigail Karr, violist Sarah Darling and cellist Kate Bennett Haynes had been playing together in various settings and combinations for over ten years before joining forces as a string trio in the winter of 2006. During that time, they gradually came to realize that their various experiences in different conservatories, countries, and musical traditions had led them to a shared vision of chamber music. The trio takes its name from the Rosetta Stone, the artifact which unlocked the meaning of Egyptian hieroglyphs for the modern world. With their commitment to historical performance of all periods, they share a belief in the power of different musical languages, placed side by side, to unlock one another's meaning. They have a special passion for late 18th-century music, which they perform frequently on a second set of instruments in historical setup. They feel that by recreating the sound colors that Mozart and Haydn would have heard, they can become more fluent in their musical languages. They also have a keen interest in music as yet unwritten: this season, we premiered string trios by composers Christopher Hossfeld and Carson Cooman , presenting them in dialogue with older styles and forms from the Renaissance through the 19th century.
