Lee Konitz is amongst the last of the Cool. On recordings with Lennie Tristano, Bill Evans,and especially with Miles Davis and Gil Evans on the "Birth Of The Cool,", Konitz established a sound and sense of phrasing that was singular and iconoclastic. He was one of the few altoists whose musical conception was genuinely distinct from the towering influence of Charlie Parker. In the ensuing decades he has performed and recorded with everyone from Ornette Coleman to Charles Mingus to Gerry Mulligan. Mr. Konitz is a genuine living legend, recently selected as a National Endowment of The Arts Jazz Master. After more than half century of performing, he is at the peak of his powers.
