Lisa Hannigan

Artist Description

Lisa Hannigan is an Irish singer-songwriter who is best known as the female voice from Damien Rice’s best selling breakthrough albums O and 9. Lisa has also appeared on a backing vocalist on Mic Christopher’s album Skylarking, as well as the soundtrack to Goldfish Memory, and has sung live and recorded with other groups including the Frames and the legendary Herbie Hancock.

A stunning vocalist, Lisa regularly performs live with Damien. In 2005 they co-wrote Unplayed Piano which was released to support the Free Aung San Suu Kyi 60th Birthday Campaign. She also joined fellow Irish songman David Kitt on stage at Glastonbury to sing BVs for a few songs during the 2005 festival.

Years later, Lisa's mother Frances began knitting in preparation for the cover artwork of her new (and first) solo album. After spending a happy month stitching the lyrics onto rough cotton, and picking out the many references to the sea in the lyrics, Lisa decided to call the album Sea Sew. Lille is the first single to be taken from the album. It's a story set to guitar, harmonium, glockenspiel, double bass and pizzicato strings and features beautiful backing vocals from Cathy Davey. It is the last song on the record but the first to come together in the demo stages with a cohesive sound and it is full of hope and optimism.

“Seems like we're incapable of mentioning Damien Rice without fawning over his accompanying vocalist, Lisa Hannigan. Her hand-wringing and char-burned vocal charm slay us… and her performances... are just mesmerizing.” - Stereogum
