Howard Fishman

Artist Description

Whether performing his own compositions or drawing on American popular music, musician Howard Fishman is recognized as one of today's most agile interpreters of the American songbook. An acclaimed singer, guitarist, composer and bandleader, Howard Fishman filters a deep passion for New Orleans soul, Brooklyn grit, open-hearted country, blues, classical, and gospel music through an original, experimental aesthetic, to create a sound entirely his own. The All-Music Guide has called him "an important force in creative music," and The New York Times has written that his work "transcends time and idiom." Howard's tributes to other musicians have included his sold-out, three-night marathon interpretation of Bob Dylan and The Band's complete "Basement Tapes" sessions here at Joe's Pub (and later at Lincoln Center), as well as investigations of Lonnie Johnson's late-career catalog and Hoagy Carmichael's lesser-known work.
