Sao Paulo's Curumin (aka Luciano Nakata Albuquerque) will be making his first major New York performance tonight performing songs from his debut album Achados e Perdidos (Quannum Projects/2005), and backed by his band from Brazil. His music recalls 70s samba funk at its best, peppered with afro-beat, dub and modern flourishes of jazz, funk, and hip hop. Achados e Perdidos features dense live instrumentation, with Curumin himself behind vintage synths, guitars, ukulele, drums and more. On stage he shuffles between the drums, cavaco (Brazilian ukulele) and the MPC, all the while serenading you with a voice that channels the greatest of soul singers. The native Brazilian is of Japanese and Spanish descent and boasts an impressive background of musical experimentation dating back to the age of 7. He received his nickname Curumin (affectionate Brazilian term for "little boy") when he was just 8 years old and formed his first rock n' roll band, complete with homemade drum kit. The Brazilian mastermind has a new EP and full-length in the works."One of the smarter young musicians in São Paulo, Curumin is a fully paid-up scholar of both Brazilian and American funk from the 70's" - New York Times
Tetine are Brazilian artists/musicians Bruno Verner and Eliete Mejorado who formed the duo in São Paulo, Brazil. They have just released their brand new baby L.I.C.K My Favela - an experimental baile funk-driven album of mutant ghetto pop. Other releases include the acclaimed The Sexual Life of The Savages (2005) on Soul Jazz Records, Bonde Do Tetao (2004) on Brazil's indie label Bizarre Music, Slum Dunk Presents Funk Carioca mixed by Tetine (2004) on Mr Bongo and the authorial Samba De Monalisa – Tetine Vs. Sophie Calle (2002) for London imprint Sulphur Records. Tetine's music is a sexy mix of experimental mutant electro-rap with baile funk beats over political lyrics. Tetine have also hosted a weekly radio show Slum Dunk on Resonance Fm 104.4 in London on Brazilian experimental, electronic music from the slums, hills and beyond for the past three years. Their performances are hot, sexual and incredibly intense. "Lying at the intersection of performance art, video, and dirty electronica, a Tetine concert comes off as a Latin American version of Fischerspooner, with the raw sounds of baile funk infusing the squelchy beats." - Flavorpill
