Show Description
"Earl Dax's Weimar New York slices cabaret with cutting-edge performance."- Time Out, New York
(A portion of ticket sales for this show will be donated to Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR), a national media watch group which has been offering well-documented criticism of media bias and censorship since 1986. FAIR works to invigorate the First Amendment by advocating for greater diversity in the press and by scrutinizing media practices that marginalize public interest, minority and dissenting viewpoints. FAIR also produces CounterSpin, a weekly radio program and Extra! magazine.)
After a sold-out summer season at the Spiegeltent, "Weimar New York" returns home to Joe's Pub to offer it's signature blend of performance art, music and burlesque with an eye on election year politics. Fresh from headlining Carnegie Hall as one half of Kiki and Herb, Justin Bond presides over an evening that spans the gamut from the trenchant observations of legendary performance artist Penny Arcade to the sophisticated stylings of German cabaret performer Daniel Isengart. The mischievous Pixie Harlots provide a dose of gender-bending glamor, and with great pleasure we welcome the prodigiously talented Novice Theory to the community of "Weimar New York" artists.
Juxtaposing the aesthetic and music of "Weimar-era Berlin" with that of the contemporary downtown performance scene in New York, Weimar New York also spotlights the uneasy parallels between the rise of fascistic and nationalistic elements in Weimar Germany and the unprecedented growth of reactionary policies and religious extremism today. In so doing Weimar New York is, according to the Village Voice, "keeping the Weimar-era spirit of cultural resistance alive."
