Fink / Jena Malone

Fink / Jena Malone and Her Bloodstains

Show Description

"I feel like I'm 21 all over again," says Fink exuding enough wide-eyed enthusiasm to back up his claim. This former purveyor of cool, laidback Ninja Tune beats has done what very few recording artists would dare to do - he has changed. Completely. "I've DJed the world over, remixed for countless acts, and produced inspirational artists (including Martin Taylor, Amy Winehouse, Michael Pitt, and Robert Belfour), but what I've achieved with this album has wiped the hard-drive off anything else! I'm completely consumed by it and nothing else seems relevant."

What Fink has achieved is to have been reincarnated as Ninja Tune's first ever guitar-toting singer-songwriter. Immersed in a very personal labour of love, the brooding Bristol-bred, Brighton-based artist has written, produced and performed a striking, stripped-down symphony of an album. Like a twenty-first century John Martyn, Fink's insistent songs are flushed with bruised basslines and skinny blues licks. And they're exceptional.

"Pretty out-there--bedroom electronics, spaced-out keyboards, and Malone's spare vocals, falling somewhere in between Scout Niblett and Karen O." - Pitchfork

Jena Malone has been acting in various film, television and theatrical productions since she was ten years old ( including Donnie Darko, Saved! and Pride and Prejudice.) She has strived to only work on projects that speak to her personally and truthfully, even though they're not always the easiest stories to tell. Now at the age of 22 she is taking her storytelling to the next level, singing and making music as she describes is "Something I can't control, as if I have discovered all these women who live in my mouth and I can't help but want to understand who they are and help them tell their story." Although she never grew up with any formal music training, she has been singing, writing and producing her own music for a little over a year now. She cites some of her influences as Tom Waits, PJ Harvey, Neil Young, Daniel Johnston and Townes Van Zant. Later this year, Malone will release two tracks as part of a new Social Registry 7" series. Tonight's acoustic set will include Russell Simins (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) on guitar.
