Show Description
"Ms. Kuhn... came as close to channeling Ms. Nyro’s essence as any performer I’ve heard..."-Stephen Holden, NY Times
“A classy and much-needed celebration of the unappreciated composer-performer Laura Nyro. Kuhn’s program, enhanced by a collection of superb arrangements, brought out the soulfulness of Nyro’s lyrics”
–Variety
“Kuhn brings an elegance to Nyro’s songbook, but her interpretations aren’t so refined that they fail to evoke some more of the earthy and jazz-influenced aspects of Nyro’s legacy.”
-The Washington Post
“Kuhn trains her emotional, often thrilling voice on finding the joy, depression, funk and enigmatic pulse of Nyro's distinctive songs. Jeffrey Klitz's arrangements and orchestrations don't try to modernize Nyro's songs but rather give them a timeless sound that captures pop, blues, and great American balladry all at the same time.”
–The Oakland Tribune
Three-time Tony Nominee Judy Kuhn returns to Joe's Pub with her Laura Nyro Tribute “Serious Playground”. Backed by an eight-piece band, Kuhn celebrates the work one of the pioneering singer-song writers of the 60s and 70's. The show, which debuted to a sold out house at Lincoln Center's American Songbook Series includes several of Nyro's biggest hits (Stoned Soul Picnic, Stoney End) as well as some of her lesser-known gems. Judy has appeared in numerous plays and musicals on and off Broadway including Les Miserables, Chess and Eli's Comin' at Vineyard Theatre. She is the singing voice of Disney's Pocahontas and costarred in the film The Day on Fire for which she also performed the soundtrack with keyboard player John Medeski.
