Joe's Pub in the Park with Lesley Gore and More

Joes Pub in Central Park with Lesley Gore, Jill Sobule and The New Standards

Show Description

A new exploration of the pleasures of pure pop from three Joe's Pub favorites: one of the great voices of our time, one of our most respected contemporary songwriters and a jazz trio that re-imagines Outkast and The Clash as modern cabaret.

Lesley Gore burst onto the music scene in 1963 when her first single, "It's My Party," produced by Quincy Jones, became a number one hit. She is known as the most commercially successful solo artist of the Girl Group era of the 1960s. Her first hit was followed by "Judy's Turn to Cry" and the proto-feminist "You Don't Own Me." In 2005, she recorded her first album of new material since 1976, entitled Ever Since.

Singer-songwriter Jill Sobule is best known for her deeply personal and socially conscious, seriously funny and derisively tragic songs, including the 1995 hit "I Kissed a Girl," and for "Supermodel" from the soundtrack of the hit 1995 film Clueless. Underdog Victorious , released in 2004 as a fifth and most recent studio album, has been received with rave reviews.

The New Standards is a minimalist trio composed of John Munson (of Semisonic), Chan Poling (of The Suburbs) and Steve Roehm (of Rhombus). With Munson on bass/vocals, Poling on piano/vocals and Roehm on vibraphone, the band uses jazz instrumentation to reinterpret songs from a wide variety of genres, from Outkast's "Hey Ya" to "London Calling" by The Clash. In October of 2005, the band released a self-titled album produced by another member of Semisonic, Grammy® Award-winning Dan Wilson, with a follow-up album scheduled for release this fall.

I saw Jill's show on Monday and it was as great as always - loose and funny, and heartbreaking, and filled with fan requests and new songs.

There's also a free download of a previous Joe's Pub show on her website right now.

The new Joe's Pub website looks fantastic, BTW. My favorite part is the rule about no "excessive" profanity.
