Show Description

"The gutter-poet balladry, feats of acrobatic derring-do, stacked vocal loops, and cracked cabaret singing of Sxip's Hour of Charm might seem to be a crazy-quilt combination. But circus composer Sxip Shirey, it seems, likes his quilts rather crazy indeed…(It can be) argued that if it warms the soul, it doesn't particularly matter whether the pieces actually fit."
-Marc Hirsh, Boston Globe

Real life circus composer Sxip Shirey presents a high powered night of variety entertainment featuring New York City's best musical artists, comedians and the indescribable. Featuring: New music by Sxip Shirey utilizing regurgitated music boxes, human beat box and industrial flutes. Fresh from their succesful run at P.S. 122, Chicago's 500 clowns, present an excerpt from their comedy/tragedy Frankenstein. The powerful singing of Dayna Kurtz will make you forget to breathe. You dont know it but you've seen him in Spider Man 2, The Cell, The Grinch and Big Fish, contortionist Johnathan Nosan does things with his body that are illegal in certain states.

Our favorite comedian/story teller Greg Walloch is funny, sweet and raunchy as hell. We're proud to welcome from Los Angelos 2007. Aceppella Champions VOCO who take on everything from Appalachian tunes to Bartok will be in from Los Angeles to perform their compelling original music with new takes on Eastern European melodies and Americana. Always a show-stopping visual and rhythmic pleasure. She'll be literally just off the plane from London, but Kalkia Hula Girl returns once again to make a rare appearance in NYC! Also a special appearance by our favorite human beat boxer Adam Matta!

500 Clowns "As the spreading infestation of skyscrapers cast long shadows over the East Village, an ember of a vanishing sensibility burned bright Saturday at P.S. 122: "500 Clown Christmas," from a Chicago troupe combining music, clowning and acrobatics, was in raucous motion." -New York Times

Kalki Hula Girl " The cute cheerleader turned gymnastic-tastic hula queen with abs of steel". -Time Out London

Sxip Shirey "...conjures a world of infernal calliopes and cotton candy machetes wielded by Gypsy crones with angel feet..." --Silke Tudor, SF Weekly.

Dayna Kurtz "...is the kind of artist who inspires wild-eyed zealotry among her fans, and there are three reasons for it: One, she's an artist's artist, one whose whiskeyed, determined alto often earns her comparisons with Nina Simone; two, while Europeans adore her, she's obscenely underappreciated in her own country; and three, her songs, which straddle a difficult space between jazz, rock, and folk, are pure poetry. " -All Music Guide

Greg Walloch "It's not often that the typically rough-and-tumble atmosphere of the comedy stage softens enough to allow such moments of delicate human tenderness." - Stephen Holden, The New York Times.

Johnathan Nosan " A truly amazing contortionist who provides the show with its single most disturbing image"--The New York Times on Twyla Tharp's 'The Times They Are A-Changin'
