Show Description
Waterwell is one of New York City's most innovative and enthralling theater companies. Its most recent production, The|King|Operetta, a rock operetta about the last year in the life of Martin Luther King, received astounding critical acclaim with the New York Magazine calling it “One of the Best New Musicals of 2007,” and NYTheatre remarking “Groundbreaking. The next milestone of American musical theatre.” And with Advisory Board Members that include Tony Kushner, Tracy Letts and Charles Mee it's no doubt that they have become a theatrical powerhouse.
Waterwell's 3rd Annual Cabaret Benefit is a special one-night only performance of the music from The|King|Operetta sung by stars of the stage and screen. It will also feature never-before-heard material not included in the initial run at Barrow Street Theatre . In addition the company will be honoring board member Anne Mollegen Smith (former editor-in-chief of Redbook, Working Woman and McCall's) for her outstanding service to feminism and other social issues.
Featuring Corey Glover (Living Colour, Jesus Christ Superstar) as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Eisa Davis (The Wire, Passing Strange) as Coretta Scott King, Jay O. Sanders (Stuff Happens, JFK) as Lyndon Baines Johnson, Alison Pill (The Lieutenant of Inishmore, Pieces of April) as Joan Didion, Taylor Mac (Young Ladies Of, The Be(A)st of Taylor Mac) as J. Edgar Hoover.
