As backwards as it might sound, for a singer/songwriter to be able to touch people with their music, the actual process of writing is one centered on solitude. The critically acclaimed singer will release her Swedish Grammy Award winning album Leaving on a Mayday in the US on August 11 (Verve Forecast) for which she won “Best Album of The Year” and “Best Female Artist of The Year.”

This new album is produced by Bjorn Yttling of Peter, Bjorn & John who during past years also successfully produced Lykke Li, Shout Out Louds, Primal Scream, etc. Working with Bjorn helped Anna make a change in direction, letting the songs build upon the vocals and the lyrics.

If the elegant, thoughtful collection maneuvers between folk and pop, conjuring the excitement and vitality of Beth Orton’s early records, there’s a melancholic thread tying the songs together. But it’s a good melancholy, at times shot through with moments of sonic and lyrical uplift.  While turning her into a star within her own country, Ternheim’s releases have also earned her success around Europe in countries like France and Germany.  Anna did a three week sold out European tour during April this year and she has previously toured the US as support to acts like Lykke Li, El Perro del Mar and Joseph Arthur.

Lia Ices is a woman and a fierce musician, whether she was borne from the forest floor or from a mother in a hospital bed, who later bought her a piano and signed her up for lessons when she was a child. Let’s assume both are true. There’s both outright desire and intimacy in her sound, a no-pussyfooting approach to re-telling tales from the secret garden. And there is a positivism that is crucial to moving forward.
