Ethiopian Millennium Celebration Concert

Ethiopian Millennium Celebration Concert

Show Description

The Beta Israel of North America (BINA) Cultural Foundation, Inc. is dedicated to fostering the continuity of the Ethiopian Jewish cultural heritage, empowering Ethiopian Jews within the American Jewish community, providing assistance to Ethiopian Jews who come to the U.S., and serving as a bridge between the Jewish, Ethiopian, and African-American communities.

In Hebrew, BINA means “understanding.” Our aim is to promote understanding of Ethiopian Jewish culture and history. We believe that this will help us retain and carry forward our traditions and enrich Jewish life as a whole.  BINA intends on providing support to the community’s artists, filmmakers and other creative persons in their preservation of the community’s culture and history, by encouraging their works, through displays, festivals and other creative showcases

In celebration of the 3rd Millennium, which began on Sept 12th 2007, BINA will be hosting a variety of cultural and educational performances. The concert continues a series of events that celebrate the role of Ethiopia in ancient and modern history, that began at the turn of this new millennium in Addis Ababa.   The Ethiopian Millennium Celebration Series will kick-off with the Ethiopian Millennium Celebration Concert which will feature some of the rising stars of Ethiopia, including Abebe Teka and Asresash Meshesha, aka Mimi.  The concert will feature traditional Ethiopian songs from ancient times to moderns beats and grooves that leaves the body shaking.  To complete the concert, DJ Sirak will be spinning World Music as no other can.  Accompanying the singers will be Daniel Gebriel on keyboard, Samson Mitiku on bass guitar and Teshome Denek on Sax.

The start of the Ethiopian Millennium, September 12th, 2007, had special meaning for Ethiopian Jews, as it also marks Rosh Hashanah. Ethiopians celebrate New Year on the 11th of September and on September 12th during the leap year. The Ethiopian calendar has 12 months of 30 days each and a 13th month of 5 days or 6 days every fourth year and is seven years back from the Gregorian calendar. This Millennium Series gives the opportunity to show-case the religious diversity of the Ethiopian people.  BINA will celebrate the role of Ethiopia on the three faiths of the book with a panel discussion addressing this topic.  For more info visit www.binacf.org/events
