73 year old Barbara Maier, co-producer of Weimar New York and vocal coach to many of New York’s most subversive and entertaining performers, is throwing her support behind a world renowned bastion of the avant-garde. Maier, in association with GOODIE magazine, will present Revolutionary Acts: A Benefit for The Living Theatre Honoring Judith Malina. Talent set to perform includes Tony-nominated Justin Bond, Debbie Harry, Eisa Davis and Coleman Domingo of Tony-winner Passing Strange, and Nellie McKay, among an impressive list of audacious performers. Producer Maier says, “In the spirit of Judith Malina and The Living Theatre, I’ve encouraged the performers to contribute provocative works, social and political commentary.” The benefit is meant to provide substantial relief to the iconic The Living Theatre, which is experiencing financial challenges.

The Living Theatre, founded in 1947 by Judith Malina and her husband, the late Julian Beck, pioneered the staging of works by outsiders like Gertrude Stein, William Carlos Williams and Paul Goodman, as well as European writers rarely produced in America, including Brecht, Pirandello and Lorca. The company has influenced many generations of artists and activists globally with a lifelong commitment to revolutionary art in which politics and theater are inseparable. Malina’s dedication to a pacifist-anarchist philosophy has fueled the multi-award winning company. It has also landed her in jail numerous times for charges ranging from contempt of court to incitement to riot. Annie Dorsen, co-creator and director of Passing Strange, says "The Living Theatre suggests an urgent and tantalizing transgression: what if? What if we stopped believing in illusory boundaries and just...got up from our seats? They lead by example, urging all of us to keep pressing on the limits of what is possible until those limits dissolve."

The Living Theatre has staged nearly 100 productions in 28 countries in its 60-year history, including guerilla performances at Ground Zero and in Times Square protesting Abu Ghraib. The 2007 production of The Brig won OBIES for ensemble and direction by Malina, who is 81.
