Show Description
Bring in the New Year with
power and joy.
Noche Flamenca, led by
flamenco phenomenon Soledad Barrio -- hailed by Alastair Macaulay
of the New York Times as "one of the leading dancers of our
time," and celebrated around the world as "the Baryshnikov of
Flamenco" -- will celebrate Joe's Pub's 10th season
anniversary with an intense, searing, and triumphant performance.
At her side will be Barrio's perfect counterpart, the remarkable Juan
Ogalla, one of Spain's finest dancers, along with award-winning guitarist Jesus
Torrres and one of the most profound flamenco singers living, Emilio
Florido.
To witness Soledad Barrio at
Joe's Pub is a luxury -- rarely are we allowed to see the internal workings of
such an formidable creature up close. As critic Anna Arias Rubio puts it,
"[Barrio] has an ability to move audiences that I can only compare to the
singing of Billie Holiday, Edith Piaf or the Egyptian Um Kulthum". See her
this winter, if you can, at Joe's Pub.
"There is much to be
said for seeing the company on such an intimate stage; extreme effort, apparent
in beads of sweat and quivering muscles, provides a detailed rendering of a
gut-wrenching art form. The performers have nowhere to hide." -- Gia Kourlas, The New York Times
This winter, Noche
Flamenca presents a new choreography celebrating the prevailing wind of change
which has brought such joy to Spain, Europe and the rest of the world. The
show's title, "A Tiempo por Alegrias" (The Rhythms of Joy) reflects
the company's faith in human resilience, their hope for the future, and their
delight at Joe's Pub's incredible 10 years!!!.
"Noche Flamenca is
the Hagia Sofia of flamenco—you know you have to see it because it is famous,
but you have no idea how transporting it will be until you arrive." -- Renée Dumouchel, Berkshire Review for the Arts
