The Grammy-nominated French R&B duo Les Nubians presents an evening of spoken word and music featuring the work of promising French and American urban underground writers. Rooted in the spirit of Def Jam Poetry, the evening will feature an innovative mixture of urban art forms while serving as a forum for the discussion of a variety of universal issues, including city life, love, and the human spirit.Les Nubians hit single “Makeda” propelled their 1999 U.S. debut album to the top of the charts, making Princesses Nubiennes the most successful French-language album in decades. Part of the acclaimed Red Hot & Riot collective, Les Nubians have commanded the mic in collaborations with Yerba Buena, Keziah Jones, John Medeski, Baaba Maal, Manu Dibango, Tony Allen, Cheikh Lô, and Amadou & Mariam—all in tribute to their cultural homeland of Africa. The group has also shared the stage with Lupe Fiasco, Jill Scott, Marcus Miller, James Brown, and Zap Mama.
The Cultural Services of the French Embassy are proud to present I Kiffe NY - French Urban Cultures Festival , from Oct. 7 to Oct. 28. The hippest and hottest of France’s inner city art will sweep over the city with events ranging from hip hop dance and music, to gritty movies, to thought-provoking talks. I Kiffe NY will bring together edgy French artists with their American counterparts, such as Ocean’s Thirteen actor phenomenon Vincent Cassel and legendary filmmaker Melvin Van Peebles, who will co-chair the festival.
