Show Description
"Earl Dax’s Weimar New York slices cabaret with cutting-edge performance." - Time Out, New York
Juxtaposing the aesthetic and music of "Weimar-era Berlin" with that of the contemporary downtown performance scene in New York, "Weimar New York" also spotlights the uneasy parallels between the rise of fascistic and nationalistic elements in Weimar Germany and the unprecedented growth of reactionary policies and religious extremism today. In so doing Weimar New York is, according to the Village Voice, "keeping the Weimar-era spirit of cultural resistance alive."
As part of our 10th Anniversary Celebration, Joe's Pub seeks to spotlight many of the performers and shows that got their start here at 425 Lafayette Street. Thus it gives us great pleasure to present "Weimar New York" which began as a late night cabaret at the Pub in March 2006. Conceived and produced by Earl Dax, the show has gone on to sold-out presentations at Spiegeltent, LA Art Weekend, and the grand atrium of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) which was transformed into a theater for two Valentines Day editions of the show hosted by Justin Bond and Ana Matronic of the Scissor Sisters.
These two election-themed editions of the show are hosted by Ana Matronic (November 1) and Lady Bunny (November 2). As with her co-hosting duties at SFMOMA and Deitch Studios presentation of Tingel Tangel Club in June of this year, you can count on Ana Matronic to deliver a slow burn... astute and sexy with some camp thrown in for fun! (She did get her start as a faux queen at Trannyshack in San Francisco after all.) Expect Wigstock doyenne Lady Bunny to apply her acid-tongued humor to everything from Wall Street's financial meltdown to Sarah - "Guns! God! and Lipstick!" - Palin, revealing a fiery political sensibility usually limited to her blog and magazine columns.
