The first set of this evening celebrates the release of guitarist Andrew McKenna Lee's debut LP Gravity and Air on New Amsterdam Records. Imagine John Fahey, Jimi Hendrix, and Domenico Scarlatti sitting down for whiskey and a smoke. With "just phenomenal" (Sequenza 21) performance chops and compositions ranging from the raunchy to the refined, Lee consistently demonstrates just how much damage he can do to out-dated expectations of nylon-string and electric guitar performance.
McKenna Lee is joined by special guest janus. Hailed as "a gem made in heaven and polished to perfection" (Cleveland Plain Dealer), janus has long been recognized for their presentation of new and exciting works for the classic combination of flute, viola, and harp. Named after a Greek god whose double-faced image looks to the past and to the future, janus are dedicated to carrying the torch of acoustic chamber music into a new century.
New Amsterdam Records
was formed by independent musicians for independent musicians as a
haven for the young New York composers and performers whose music slips
through the cracks between genres. Their goal is to support musicians
by functioning as a truly pro-artist service organization, without the
conflict of interests present in conventional record labels. To that
end, the vast majority of proceeds from all music sales goes directly
to our artists, in order to help them develop sustainable careers. In
only our first year of existence, New Amsterdam Records has already
been labeled "the focal point of the postclassical scene" by Time Out NY and the "virtual headquarters" of the new music scene by New York Magazine.
Information about the second half of the set can be found on the QQQ/Build Joe's Pub Show Page. A combo package of $20 is offered to purchase tickets for both shows. To do so, please call 212.967.7555 or come directly to the Public Theater / Joe's Pub box office.
