The second set of the evening features QQQ. This concert will celebrate the release of QQQ's first full-length
LP, Unpacking the Trailer ... on New Amsterdam Records. Cram together a waltz à la Bill Monroe with a Norwegian wedding march, mix in some 2 and 4, and add a bit of improvisation and a post-something classical style. Now you have an idea of one QQQ tune. "...fascinating...literally brimming with fresh ideas. There’s no shorthand term for what QQQ is up to, and may it long be so" (Time Out NY). The essential ingredients of QQQ are the truly unique sound of Dan Trueman's Norweigan Hardanger fiddle, Monica Mugan's somewhat-Classical guitar, and the chamber music experience of Jason Treuting (So Percussion) and Beth Meyers (Janus).
QQQ is joined by special guest Build. Led by composer/violinist Matt McBane, Build is a startlingly-tight alternative classical band consisting of violin, cello, piano, bass, and drums- a group that "straddles the increasingly permeable line between chamber music and instrumental rock" (Time Out NY). Their eponymous debut album, released in Summer 2008 on New Amsterdam Records, features driving rock rhythms and thorny counterpoint that "could change the way you think about contemporary composition" (Blogcritics.com).
New Amsterdam Records was formed by independent musicians for independent musicians as a haven for the young New York composers and performers whose music slips through the cracks between genres. Their goal is to support musicians by functioning as a truly pro-artist service organization, without the conflict of interests present in conventional record labels. To that end, the vast majority of proceeds from all music sales goes directly to our artists, in order to help them develop sustainable careers. In only our first year of existence, New Amsterdam Records has already been labeled "the focal point of the postclassical scene" by Time Out NY and the "virtual headquarters" of the new music scene by New York Magazine.
Information about the first half of the set can be found on the Andrew McKenna/Janus Joe's Pub Show Page.
A combo package of $20 is offered to purchase tickets for both shows.
To do so, please call 212.967.7555 or come directly to the Public
Theater / Joe's Pub box office.
