Day 4 of Marc Ribot's Retrospective Birthday Week celebration brings Spiritual Unity + Marc Ribot Trio to Joe's Pub. Ribot’s trio with drummer Chad Taylor and legendary bassist Henry Grimes plus Roy Campbell, Jr on trumpet offers tribute to the galvanizing 1960s saxophonist Albert Ayler with reinterpretations of his hymn-and-march inspired songs. “Before I knew Henry personally,” Ribot says of Grimes, a former Ayler sideman who returned to music several years ago after decades away, “I used to play for bass players some cuts he was on as an example of what the bass was capable of. He played, on several of my favorite records bar none. There was an Ayler record called Swing Low Sweet Spiritual (the cd is called “Goin’ Home.”) Henry’s bass playing on that is really revolutionary.” Sharing the bill is the same trio, playing original material.
