DK Dyson / Don Byron

DK Dyson / Don Byron

Show Description

DK Dyson’s music knows no boundaries or borders and defies labels of any sort with the exception of soulful. It is not uncommon to hear sound vibrations from Brazil, India, the reservation and /or Brownsville sometimes in the same song.

Her live shows and electric charisma are well known and take in many forms from  all over the world but the threads are DK’s spirit and the emotive instrument that is her voice. She has performed worldwide and first came to  attention on  with her band Eye & I which broke down borders on the popular music front. She has performed and / or recorded with a far reaching eclectic array of musicians including Living Colour, Don Byron, Steve Coleman, Caetano Veloso, Jeff Buckley, Ornette Coleman and the Jazz Passengers (performing with Marvis Staples and Debbie Harry).

Tonight will feature a collection of powerful songs. Performed once. Only tonight. Come ...gather round as DK conjures the Bayou’s of B’klyn rock and dusts off mountains of world influences. Working her roots as only DK Dyson can.

------------------

For almost two decades, Don Byron has been a singular voice in an astounding range of musical contexts, exploring widely divergent traditions while continually striving for what he calls "a sound above genre." As clarinetist, saxophonist, composer, arranger, and social critic, he redefines every genre of music he plays, be it classical, salsa, hip-hop, funk, rhythm & blues, klezmer, or any jazz style from swing and bop to cutting-edge downtown improvisation.  He has been consistently voted best clarinetist by critics and readers alike in leading international music journals since being named “Jazz Artist of the Year” by Down Beatin 1992. Acclaimed as much for his restless creativity as for his unsurpassed virtuosity as a player, Byron has presented a multitude of projects at major music festivals around the world, including recent performances in Vienna, San Francisco, Hong Kong, London, Monterey, New Zealand, Australia, and on New York’s Broadway.

The Trustees of the American Academy in Rome awarded the 2009 The Samuel Barber Rome Prize for Composition to Don Byron, Composer, Clarinetist/Saxophonist, and Visiting Associate Professor, University at Albany State University of New York.

Don Byron's composition 7 Etudes for Solo Piano was nominated as a finalist for the 2009 Pulitzer Prize in music. The pieces, a deft set of studies that display rhythmic inventiveness and irresistible energy, charm and wit, were premiered on March 15, 2008 at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, Buffalo, NY. Co-commissioned by pianist Lisa Moore and Meet the Composer, 7 Etudes are the center pieces of HIMM, Moore's upcoming solo album featuring music by Don Byron, to be released this summer on Cantaloupe Music.

You know they say first impressions are lasting impressions. Well, I saw DK at a BRC function at CBGBs, it was my first time there and I was a new to the NYC scene. She came to the stage in one of the Moroccan hand cabs carried by these gorgeous hunks of men. I was mesmorised from the first note and stood there with my mouth open for the whole show. That was about 20+ years ago and I still remember it like it was yesterday. Whenever I have taken the stage over the years, she has come to mind at every performance as she is so relaxed an at home on stage and I have always been terrified. Thanks DK for your continued inspiration, i am glad to see you are still out there doing your thang. GO GURL!!!! Forever
