Lina Orfanos and The Poetica Ensemble perform songs by the eminent Greek composer and activist Mikis Theodorakis on the occasion of his 85th birthday. The haunting and poetic songs of Theodorakis have been galvanizing audiences around the world for over 60 years. His compositions for the taverna, theater, cinema, and concerts halls revolutionized Greek music. Known in the United States for the soundtracks of Zorba the Greek, Z, and Serpico, Theodorakis uses the poetry andthe muses of Ancient, Byzantine, and Modern Greece. His artistic message bridges the gap between concert music and popular music, between high art and low art, and between Eros and Thanatos.Lina Orfanos is a performing and recording artist who has been a regular guest star in Greece with the orchestra of Mikis Theodorakis. The composer has personally coached her and this past summer while interpreting his songs at his Athens studio, Theodorakis exclaimed, "With Lina my songs have a new beginning."
In the United States, Lina regularly performs with her band The Poetica Ensemble under the musical direction of the creative Spiros Exaras. The ensemble is composed of Spiros Exaras, guitar, Megan Gould, violin and baglama, Mathias Kunzli, percussion, Yoed Nir, cello, and Kostas Psarros, bouzouki. Producer Terry G. Williams recently observed: “Lina Orfanos and The Poetical Ensemble gave one of the finest concerts we’ve had the privilege of hosting in eleven years of the International Performing Arts Series at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Lina has passionate feelings for the music she sings, rewarding her audience with exquisite moments of connection with the composers her singing praises. It’s no wonder Mikis Theodorakis applauds her interpretation of his music. And the Poetica Ensemble is her worthy companion, a group of meticulously skilled musicians who play as one with grace and soul that only those with exceptional skills are able to reveal. You must not miss this group.”
