Imani Uzuri

Show Description

"put your hand where it hurts and this sound may heal you...there is no way you can hear such music and not be transformed."
-Greg Tate (excerpt from liner notes for Her Holy Water: A Black Girl's Rock Opera)

Imani Uzuri
's critically acclaimed solo debut album Her Holy Water: A Black Girl's Rock Opera was recently heralded as "one of the best of the decade" by BoldAsLove.us. In fall 2009 New York Magazine called her work "stunning". Eclectic and dynamic, Uzuri is often compared to artists like Grace Jones and Nina Simone as one who defies category. Featured at numerous international venues from Morocco to Moscow, this bohemian spirit "... never fails to mesmerize audiences with her narcotic blend of...ethereal sounds." (Time Out New York). Uzuri has collaborated and recorded with the legendary Herbie Hancock, John Legend, 4-Hero, King Britt and Sly and Robbie and will be featured on Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek's upcoming Reflection Eternal album. Currently she is featured as the voice of BET's 2010 Black History Month campaign and also featured in her own BET promo spot walking down 125th singing in front of the legendary Apollo. She is working on music for her forthcoming new album, a meditative and spiritual exploration.

This concert will also feature:

Liberty Ellman
- guitar
Tarrah Reynolds - violin and vocals
Marika Hughes - cello
Christian Ver Halen - guitar
Neel Murgai - sitar and daf
