"JohnnySwim crafts gripping melodies...the songs transfix"
–PopMatters
"...the two come off seamless and natural"
–The Tennessean
JohnnySwim, aka Abner Ramirez and Amanda Sudano-Ramirez, create a compelling amalgam of soul, folk, pop, and blues that is rooted in the eclectic enclaves of Nashville, Los Angeles, and New York City. They are the stylistic cousin to Lauryn Hill, John Legend, and Corinne Bailey Rae yet wholly original and distinct from any other artist or band. 5-8 encompasses the evolution of JohnnySwim: from the intimate coffeehouse vibe of their earliest performances in Nashville to the pop luster of their 2008 debut 1-4, to the magnetism of their recent concert appearances that have thrilled audiences everywhere from The Roxy (L.A.) to S.O.B.'s (NYC).
Joining JohnnySwim for this very special evening is Grammy-winner Maya Azucena. Hailed for her "storytelling lyrics and soulful, soaring vocals" by Billboard and "armed with a powerfully compelling voice" according to The Village Voice, Maya Azucena believes that music is a tool for healing and activism and supports humanitarian causes with her voice. Having shared stages with a number of new and legendary artists like Roberta Flack, John Legend, Gladys Knight and collaborated with Vernon Reid, Stephen Marley, and Greg Tate, Maya Azucena is currently completing her forthcoming album Cry Love, the follow-up to her critically acclaimed acoustic soul project Junkyard Jewel.
