"…one man is taking sonic creativity to the next level"

"…There's been a buzz about this band lately and it's well-deserved…These guys took [the party] up a notch." Lucid Culture
The innovative and surprising music of Sxip Shirey and the Balkan funk of Raya Brass Band at first might at first seem like an odd pairing but they share a New York lineage that includes the dance parties of Gemini and Scorpio, underground art events and Back Yard BBQs in Brooklyn.
-With harmonica and megaphone in hand, Shirey taps the loop-sampler with his foot. Dirty hip- hop beats scroll out of the sound system, as his drummer kicks in a counter rhythm that unfurls a tight snare klezmer for a distinctly urban sound. Shirey surprises with red marbles rolling in electroacoustic glass bowls, industrial flutes, bass siren whistles, a regurgitated music box, and a whole bag of tricks.
-Raya Brass Band is the sort of brass band that gleefully mashes up the music of Eastern Europe with funky American dance grooves, Reggaeton, and whatever else it gets its hands on. Featuring odd meters, unusual scales and a fine helping of gorgeous Balkan and Romany (Gypsy) melodies played on tuba, drums, accordion, trumpet, and woodwinds, Raya Brass Band slakes the thirst for something old and new at the same time.
