Show DescriptionIn celebration of its tenth year of producing dance at Joe’s Pub, DANCENOW will present Dorothy, Annie, Maria, a program featuring excerpts from three acclaimed works commissioned by DANCENOW over the past decade: Nicholas Leichter Dance’s The Whiz: Emerald City, The Bang Group’s ShowDown, and Doug Elkins’ Fräulein Maria. Masterful and magical takes on beloved classics, the works feature an eclectic mix of dance styles and a host of electric performers. The program opens in Emerald City and closes with Doug Elkins’ renowned solo Climb Ev’ry Mountain.
Nicholas Leichter Dance’s The Whiz: Emerald City (2010) reimagines New York’s underground communities through song, dance, and “Prince-esque extravaganzardry.” A Wizard of Oz for the Obama generation, The Whiz references the film’s characters to reflect on 21st-century New York in movement and melody. The Whiz is choreographed and performed by Leichter with Lauren Basco, Wendell Cooper, Aaron Draper, and Dawn Robinson.
The Bang Group’s ShowDown (2009) takes songs from Irving Berlin's Annie Get Your Gun, strips them of their original narrative context, and sets them in a contemporary choreographic world. With anarchic wit and rhythmic vigor, the dances unravel the venerable musical’s themes of a showdown between the sexes, the lure of show business, and the juncture of love and ambition. ShowDown is danced by a nearly all-male cast with Amber Sloan and Nic Petry splitting the central role. They are joined by Dylan Baker, Greg Youdan, Zack Winokur, Jeffrey Kazin, and Parker.
A Bessie Award-winning production, Doug Elkins’ Fräulein Maria (2006) is an irreverent, kinetic twist on The Sound of Music, set to selections from Rodgers & Hammerstein’s score. Bringing a witty, urban flair to this timeless classic, Fräulein employs Elkins’ singular brand of smart, silky street dance-fused movement. The cast includes Archie Burnett, Carolyn Cryer, Donnell Oakley, David Parker, and Elkins.
