Holcombe Waller

Holcombe Waller w/ special guests Gabriel Kahane, Miguel Gutierrez & Carol Lipnik

Show Description

Holcombe Waller is a singer, composer and performing artist known for his arresting, elastic vocals and subtle but knife-twisting folk and pop songwriting that dances with the elements.  He employs themes of nostalgia, intimacy and the search for spiritual meaning to create music and performances that are at once cathartic, meditative and exuberant. He is a 2011 United States Artists Berresford Fellow in Music, an award which noted his mournful, folk-inflected style as well as his approach to music “as total theater.”

Over the a career spanning thirteen years, Waller has self-released five albums on his own label, has toured three interdisciplinary performances, and has ventured numerous collaborations with film and dance makers. He is currently generating a new album of alternative R&B, a new theatrical concert, and a community-oriented LGBT Requiem Mass in memory of LGBT persecuted in the name of religion. He is a two-time recipient of the prestigious MAPFund Grant and a 2011 United States Artists Berresford Fellow in Music, and he has been presented and/or commissioned by The New York Public Theater, On the Boards (Seattle), Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (SF), The Centre Pompidou (Paris), and many others.

Waller was born and raised in San Francisco and currently resides in Portland, Oregon.

"He's got the crazy-beautiful...voice of an androgynous seraph, but he's really a coffee-house troubadour from San Francisco and a classically trained pianist, a jazz saxophonist, and a visual artist." -Kate Sullivan, SPIN Magazine
