The Times Loves CAPATHIA and LOUIS |
|
New York Times Writer Steven Holden wrote a gleaming review of Capathia Jenkins and Louis Rosen's Monday, May 12 performance at Joe's. The show marked the release of the dynamic vocalist-songwriter duo's new album, "One Ounce of Truth: The Nikki Giovanni Songs" and was the first of four performances here at Joe's Pub.
Holden had this to say:
"The music is notable for its modesty and its care not to impede the
conversational rhythms of the poetry. You might describe Mr. Rosen’s
uncategorizable, continually shifting musical patchwork of blues, folk,
jazz and pop as earthy, tuneful art song. He is from the South Side of
Chicago, and the polyglot influences show. Ms. Jenkins,
familiar from Broadway (“Caroline, or Change”) is not a vocal showoff.
She dramatizes Ms. Giovanni’s poetry only to the degree that the
language calls for it."

GOLEM (May 13 at 9:30PM)
First, I'm just going to put it out there that I have never been a huge klezmer fan. But GOLEM's youthful energy and incredible New York attitude take them out of the klezmer realm and bring them to this psedo-punk perfection. The bottom line: they deliver solid, accessible yet mold-breaking, original music.

NYTimes raves about Joe's Pub in Travel Section |
|
Here's a little SAT question for you:
PIZZA : NEW YORK CITY CUISINE ::
a) NY GIANTS : PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
b) AMELIORATE : SYNDICATION
c) JOE'S PUB: NEW YORK CITY MUSIC SCENE
d) PERAMBULATE : TRIANGULATE
e) huh?
According to this week's Travel Section in the New York Times, the correct answer is C! Seth Kugel's article, entitled "Balcony? Not at These Intimate Listening Spots" for the Weekend in New York feature, highlights New York's best intimate music spots, and you guessed it, Joe's Pub made the cut.
Here's what he had to say:
"Mentioning small sites in New York without mentioning Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater would be like writing about New York cuisine and leaving out pizza. Big names and future big names come through. Their Web site allows you to search by just about every genre in existence short of yodeling (though that’s theoretically part of world music). There are several shows a night, seven nights a week; you can reserve a table if you’re going to order dinner from the Italian menu; otherwise, your ticket guarantees entrance only." - New York Times
Come to think about it, the yodeling category might be a useful one to add. But either way, we love the Times -- and some of the other venues they mention are pretty rad too. Check out the May and June calendars to see what we've got coming up.

CAPATHIA JENKINS/ LOUIS ROSEN One Ounce of Truth (May 12 at 7:00PM)
Capathia Jenkins' talent is a force that cuts through the barriers of the fourth wall deep into your soul and resonates within, moving you to smile. Her voice is clear, precise and powerful. As the role of the Washing Machine in the hit Broadway musical Caroline, or Change, Capathia delivered a majestic performance which made you think twice every time you went to do laundry – so I cannot wait to see what she does live at Joe’s!
